Katagami
型紙 : Paper stencil patterns Katagami is the paper pattern which was used to dyeing of Kimono. The most of Katagami were made at Shiroko town (Suzukashi, Mie pref.) of Ise. The name of the Ise Katagami is spread in the whole country by the activity of the paper pattern merchant and is known from the Edo era.
The dyeing stencil is smoked in the cellar after having layered with sheets of Japanese paper and persimmon tannin. Then carved a pattern and reinforced it with a thin thread. The refined technology of Katagami succeeded in Edo era called the closed world.
As the Japanese life becomes affluent circumstances , an original pattern is created and expresses each characteristic in each times.
The paper pattern is a treasure house of Japanese traditional textile design.
However, only few craftsmen succeed to tradition by innovation of the dyeing now.
