型紙行灯 : Katagami Andon (Discontinued manufacturing )
These are Andon lamps. The lampshades are made from stencil paper of various patterns which were originally used to print kimono.
The stencil paper is one of the important printing tools in the process of kimono fabric making. Majority of the stencil paper for printed Yuzen, Edokomon and Yukata were made in Shirako of Ise area (Suzuka-shi, Mie-ken). Thus, the name Ise Stencil Paper has been spread by the stencil paper craftsmen and their hard work, and spread throughout Japan since olden days.
The stencil paper is layered with sheets of paper and Kakishibu (persimmon tannin), and smoked with sawdust in a chamber to stiffen. Then, patterns are cut out and reinforced with thin threads. The technique was strictly refined and handed down generation to generation to the ultimate art of stencil paper making during the closed world of Edo Period. The technique was spread throughout the country to create and re-create a wide variety of patterns. As such, they represent the characteristics of the time and area of creation.
However, the tradition of the stencil paper making has been diminished to a waning industry with only a handful of such craftsmen remained due to the technological revolution of fabric dyeing.
Ishii Collection has transformed such stencil paper into lightings using the legacy of then craftsmen, focusing on such stencil paper which helped create the world of rich and glamorous world of kimono. Each lamp is hand-crafted and unique. Enjoy the lamp of your own.
